The World Language Department is very proud of the language acquisition and accomplishments of the students at Cumberland Valley.
Cumberland Valley, in collaboration with the appropriate national organizations, recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in French, German, and/or Spanish through membership in the National World Language Honor Society (NWLHS).
Students become eligible upon completion of 3 consecutive years of study at the start of their 4th year of study (or start of year 5/6 if they have not previously qualified). Students must have a 93% overall UNWEIGHTED average for all previously studied levels of one specific World Language and be free of any academic dishonesty referrals.
Upon acceptance for membership, current and upcoming members are required to complete the following criteria in order to remain a member and receive recognition at graduation:
- Continue studying a World Language (either continuing in the language of induction to the highest level possible, or pursuing study in a different World Language)
- Maintain an overall 93% average (grades for Levels IV and higher may be averaged including weighting)
- Continue to be free of any academic dishonesty referrals
- Complete a minimum of 3 different activities promoting World Language and/or culture per year through graduation
Student members are inducted into the society in March and receive a certificate of membership. At their graduation ceremony, students who have remained eligible receive recognition for their World Language excellence as well.
Please visit the NWLHS Application for Membership Form if you are interested in applying for membership.
World Language Honor Society Induction this year will tentatively be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, as part of our National Foreign Language Week celebration.
Congratulations to all those who qualify!
