Science Competitions and Extra-curricular work

Please note that Cumberland Valley schools will support competitions to the best of their abilities, but most of these opportunities are primarily extracurricular activities for which students hold the primary responsibility for success.  Competitions and teams that are available will be offered each year based upon interest and available resources, but we can not guarantee that support will be available for a given opportunity.

CV HOSA:  HOSA is a student led organization that seeks to provides access to instructional and competition opportunities related to Health occupation careers.

Envirothon: Each year, students at CVHS participate in a competition that tests their knowledge and skills related to topics of importance in Pennsylvania wildlife biology and ecology.

Science Olympiad at CV

  • A student club is forming to support students interested in pursuing this extra-curricular course at Hershey Medical Center; transportation is left up to the students.
  • "A novel collaboration between medical students and high school students, the PULSE program is a semester long academic course taught at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center from 4:00 to 6:30 pm on Mondays in the fall. PULSE aims to cultivate interest in medicine and healthcare by introducing high school students to medical topics through lectures, facilitated small group learning experiences, and supplemental activities (e.g. laboratories, simulations, exhibits, student presentations)."
  • Penn State College of Medicine hosts this lecture series for adults and high school students to learn about important trends in medicine and health. College of Medicine faculty will provide in-depth lectures on important issues and advances in medicine and research, incorporating basic science, medical research, and clinical applications. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions after each lecture.
  • Sessions are held on Tuesday evenings; there is no fee to attend, but registration is required and seating is first-come-first-serve.

Perry Outreach Program: Female students in grades 10-12
  • The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience for high school and college-aged women who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Students will hear from women leaders in these fields and try it for themselves by performing mock orthopedic surgeries and biomechanics experiments. 

ACT-SO: African American Students
  • This event is open to all high school students interested in the brain, neurology, and neuroscience.
  • The contest involves three rounds 1) written test of multiple choice questions on brain facts; 2) a charade round with an opportunity to diagnose several neurological disorders (acted out by medical student volunteers!); and 3) a test to identify anatomical structures and functions in real human brain specimens in the laboratory. 
  • All the questions are based on information in the free SFN Brain Facts book, which can be downloaded from the link:
  • Poster Contest "Discover the connection between biomedical research and your life! The poster contest provides the opportunity for students to illustrate different aspects of biomedical research and science through art. The contest is free to enter."
  • Essay Contest: "Discover the connection between biomedical research, animal research, and your life! The contest recognizes students who artfully demonstrate a superior understanding of the connection between their life and biomedical research (including the need for animals in that research)."

Health Careers Scholar Academy: Sophomores and Juniors

  • The dynamic world of health care plus the expertise of University of Pittsburgh academics and facilities. This educational mixture shapes a unique, academically rigorous, hands-on campus experience for students attending Pitt’s Health Career Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) each summer.
