Middle School Courses

All students in 6th grade take Family and Consumer Sciences.  This year students focus on problem solving and following directions while designing and creating a pillow.  Students will learn how to attach buttons, hand sew, use a sewing machine, and iron.

All students in 7th grade take Family and Consumer Sciences.  This year students will gain experience in Child Development and Food Science.  Students will learn about development from infancy through preschool and create an activity that is developmentally appropriate for children in this age range.  In Food Science students are exposed to the components of My Plate and will practice making food in the microwave, stove top, and blender using foods from a variety of food groups.

Courses this year are electives, thus students in 7th grade will request to have 4 elective courses during their 8th grade year.  Students may take all, one, or none of the Family and Consumer Sciences electives.

Food Science & Nutrition
A hands on, interactive course where students will study and demonstrate safe food handling techniques by preparing dishes included in a well-balanced daily menu.  Through study of My Plate and dietary guidelines, students will engage in meal planning activities. Child Development & Textiles
This course is currently only offered at Mountain View Middle School. The course is
designed to provide students an opportunity to explore child development and textile science. The child development unit of the course is designed to prepare students to interact with children between infancy and preschool age.  Students will learn about major areas of development while creating and implementing developmentally appropriate lessons and activities for children. The textiles and design unit will provide students the opportunity to apply design concepts to create projects using a sewing machine and hand-sewing. Regardless of having previous sewing skills, students will have the opportunity to gain a new skill.
