Welcome to the Cumberland Valley English Language Arts Department!
The English Language Arts department embraces a windows and doors approach to Board approved curriculum. Curricula materials that serve as mirrors allow students to see themselves represented in texts, images, and media. Curricula materials that serve as windows allow students to learn about the stories of others through their experiences.
Examples of these curricular approaches include:
- Analyzing primary sources from multiple perspectives
- Reading written from differing points of view texts that share a common theme
- Establishing the relationships between historic events and literary/artistic works
- Connecting past events with the present to show the relevance of history and its impact on today
- Helping students learn about themselves while also learning about, respecting, and seeing value in others
- Remembering there are different sides to every story and that every story has value
- Describing and illustrating how common themes are found across texts from different cultures
