What is National History Day?

National History Day (NHD) is a meaningful way for students to study historical issues, ideas, people, and events by engaging in historical research. Beginning in the fall, students choose a topic related to the annual theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research.

Each year NHD uses a theme to provide a lens for students to study history. Following their research, students work to present their research in one of the following categories:

  1. Original paper
  2. Exhibit
  3. Performance
  4. Website
  5. Documentary

Students may choose to work independently or in groups of TWO or THREE students. While students may work in groups of up to 5, we strongly suggest not having more than 3 in a group.

These projects are entered into competitions in the spring at local, state, and national levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.

Participation in NHD will allow students to develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that will help them manage and use information now and in the future.
