Serene Sherman, a Collegiate soccer player, entered the transfer portal with a clear vision for her future. Sherman knew she wanted more out of her college soccer career and felt that staying where she was would not allow her to reach her full potential. For Sherman, the decision to transfer was not about leaving something behind, but about chasing greater opportunities both on and off the field.
Sherman is very grateful for her previous experience. The meaningful relationships with teammates and met professors who had a lasting impact on her academic journey. Her first year of college soccer also provided valuable learning experiences and exposure. Although the outcome of her first year was undesirable. Sherman gathered experience that will propel her forward.
What stood out most during her recruitment process was the communication from the coaching staff at Anderson. Coaches made an effort to be transparent and consistent. This made a strong impression on her. She was also drawn to the campus itself, describing it as beautiful, and felt that the location was a great fit for her lifestyle. Academics played a major role in her decision. Sherman wanted to attend a school that offered the program she was passionate about, and Anderson’s strong kinesiology program made it an ideal fit. Knowing she could pursue her academic goals alongside soccer gave her confidence in her decision. The transfer process was not without its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles she faced was fear. Specifically, the concern that coaches might not be genuine and would only view her through the lens of her athletic ability instead of seeing her as a whole person. These were all things Sherman took into consideration before committing.
When asked what advice she would give to other athletes entering the transfer portal, Sherman emphasizes patience. She encourages athletes not to rush their decision or focus solely on athletics. Instead, she believes it’s important to consider the fuller picture of social life, academics, athletics, location, and overall fit—to ensure the best possible experience.
From a soccer standpoint, Sherman is excited about the opportunity to truly play center back, her position that came the most naturally when she could not do so consistently at GV. Anderson’s formation aligns closely with what she grew up playing, allowing her to feel confident and comfortable stepping into the system.
Sherman has high aspirations to prove herself, compete for a starting position, and push herself harder than she ever has before. She thrives on competition and is motivated by the challenge of earning her role rather than having it handed to her. Preparing for the upcoming season, Sherman says she is most excited about the opportunity to play and prove that she wants to be there. She is eager to show her commitment, her work ethic, and her love for the game.
