Being a student athlete at Cumberland Valley High School requires strong time management, preparation, and dedication. With long school days followed by practices and games, athletes must stay focused both academically and athletically. To better understand how CV athletes handle these responsibilities, I spoke with Kal Duppstadt, a freshman varsity basketball player.
Balancing schoolwork with varsity basketball can be challenging, especially as a freshman. Duppstadt shared that staying ahead academically helps him manage his schedule. “Normally, I try to get my work done during the school day and done early so I don’t have to do it after practices and games,” Duppstadt said.
Mental preparation plays a major role in his performance on the court. Before games, Duppstadt focuses on visualization and team preparation. “I visualize the moments, and as a team we go over film,” Duppstadt said.
Strength training is another important part of basketball performance, and Duppstadt reflected on his preparation before the season. “I wish I had done more strength training before the season started,” Duppstadt said.
For younger athletes hoping to compete at a high level, Duppstadt offered advice based on his own experience. “Just be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not and just work hard and do the things coaches ask of you,” Duppstadt said.
As student athletes at Cumberland Valley continue to manage demanding schedules, Duppstadt’s approach highlights how preparation, discipline, and hard work can lead to success both in the classroom and on the basketball court.
