At Cumberland Valley High School, one woman stands out in the gym. Not just for her energy and passion, but for the impact she has on her students and the school community. Mrs. Corinne Nealy is currently the only female physical education teacher at CV, and she brings unmatched enthusiasm, dedication, and a deep commitment to helping students grow physically and personally.
Mrs. Nealy promotes gender representation within the physical education department. Her presence encourages young women to feel confident, capable, and included in the study of physical education. But for Mrs. Nealy, it’s not just about representation, it’s about connection and purpose.
Mrs. Nealy’s journey into teaching was inspired by her love of sports and her early experiences working with young people.
“I really enjoyed coaching and swimming in high school. I also taught [swim] school lessons when I was a teenager. I enjoyed seeing kids learn how to move and get excited when they accomplished their skills,” she said.
That passion for movement and growth became the foundation for a meaningful teaching career. One in which she now helps students discover the joy and benefits of being active.
As the only woman on the physical education team, Mrs. Nealy is aware of the uniqueness of her position, but doesn’t have a sense of limitation.
“I wasn't viewed any differently. It's not often that there's only male teachers. It just depends on who's applying for the position at the time. It's not like the males outdid the females. Just because you’re a female doesn’t mean you shouldn't go after doing whatever you want to do in life.”
She added that while it might be nice to have another female teacher in the department, her relationships and support system within the school remain strong.
“I would probably enjoy it a little more if there was another female Phys Ed teacher, but the females that I used to work with are still in the building, so it still feels the same. And I have great relationships with all the males too. So it’s not too big of a deal.”
To Mrs. Nealy, physical education is about more than just sports, it's about lifelong wellness.
“Moving your body and staying active helps you feel better. It helps your body stay healthy. Your overall wellness is just so much better in the long run.”
Personal relationships are important for Nealy too.
“What motivates me are the connections with students and teachers, and being able to help students. Whether it’s finding an activity that you enjoy or maybe if someone is having a difficult time and needs someone to talk to. That's what keeps me here. The connections.”
Mrs. Nealy takes pride in being a relatable role model for female students, especially when it comes to health and fitness.
“I’m thankful that I’m here because I think I give female students someone to connect with when it comes to finding a physical activity that you enjoy. I’m glad I can do some of the activities that maybe a male teacher doesn't want to necessarily teach.”
As she looks to the future, Mrs. Nealy hopes her journey will inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
“Hopefully someone else might take over this role and help the next generation of females that want to be active and take part.”
