Artificial intelligence has quickly moved from a futuristic idea to a present reality in schools, changing how classes run and how students think about their work. At Cumberland Valley High School, P.E. teacher Mr. Todd Bedard has seen the shift firsthand, and he says the rise of AI is already shaping the way teachers and students interact with education on a larger scale.
”I use it for just about everything,” Bedard said.
Students aren’t the only ones who utilize AI; teachers also take advantage of the technology. Bedard uses AI to streamline the process of writing letters of recommendation by providing the machine with an outline and allowing it to fill in between the lines, as well as making lesson plans and brainstorming ideas for class.
To Bedard, the ways students can make use of AI in the classroom can be boiled down to three categories: researching, editing, and studying. These things are the strengths of the AI and are the best way to enhance your learning.
“AI will make up for those lacks of transportation and the ability to get a teacher in front of kids,” Bedard said.
In 10 years, Bedard predicts that AI will progress to the point where it writes curriculum for classes behind the scenes and elevates remote learning to the same level of effectiveness as face-to-face learning. This will help solve school districts like ours that have transportation issues and not enough seats in the classroom, because remote schooling will become a more viable option.
Bedard recommends the sites Chat GPT, Gemini, Claude, and Co-Pilot for people looking to operate AI for the first time.
