Construction of a new Costco across from Cumberland Valley High School is underway, with the retail giant set to open its doors in October 2025. While the project promises increased shopping options for the area, local residents and students are bracing for the expected surge in traffic, raising concerns about the impact on daily commutes and school safety.

CV families are concerned about developments in traffic patterns in the surrounding area.

Mr. Michael Sokolas—Chief Operating Officer of Cumberland Valley School District–addressed those concerns.

“Some of the changes that they have implemented or plan to implement include: a refurbishment and redesign of Hempt Road, Dapp Lane (which will significantly improve the ability for us to move traffic on and off of our campuses), main entrance and exit to our campus, and improvements to the Hempt Road/Fry Drive intersection. All these updates are expected to be completed between now and November 2026,” Sokolas said.

Students and parents also wonder about access to the new property.

“While crosswalks have been discussed, the developer in collaboration with Silver Spring Township have landed on instead installing an underground tunnel that will connect the CV Campus (near the District Office) to the development across the street…This is expected to be completed sometime in 2027,” Sokolas said.

Despite this, Sokolas anticipated that the worst of the congestion would take place in the first few weeks of Costco’s opening. The CV and Silver Spring Township Police will be expected to keep a watchful eye for hazardous conditions impacting motorists.

In regards to his advice to parents, students, and drivers, Sokolas offered his input on transportation.

“I think the best advice I can give for the days immediately following the opening of Costco is to allow for extra time to commute in the morning and afternoon and to be sure to drive distraction free…by allowing extra time and driving distraction free drivers can help to ensure a safe commute for fellow motorists,” Sokolas said.

Sokolas urges the community to remain vigilant and plan accordingly during the transition, ensuring that safety remains a priority as the new Costco begins its operations.
