Monroe News:

As we begin a new school year and transition to Skyward (new student database) please remember to submit your online forms, contact information and health information. This information must be completed each year. Once you submit the contact and the health information, and the submission has been approved, the “tile” on your Skyward portal will turn green and be labeled “new”. You do not need to submit the information again - the tile will remain on your portal for your future use should you need to update contact or health information.

Upcoming Dates:

Monday, September 2 – NO SCHOOL

Wednesday, September 11 – Fall Picture Day

From the Nurse
:

Lice Check – Rational:

Lice do not cause serious health issues

In most cases lice have been on the child’s head for 1 month before being discovered

Prevention of lice transmission should be consistently practiced (avoid head-to-head contact, instruct child not to share personal belongings, avoid shared spaces)

The Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses recommend not excluding or allowing children to miss school due to head lice.

Lice Check – What to Look For:

Signs of infestation are head scratching or a sudden appearance of white specks in the hair. The white specks may be the nits or eggs that the head louse has laid

Nits may be found on the hair shaft about a quarter to half an inch away from the scalp and are often found behind the ears, in the bangs and at the base of the neck

Eggs or nits look like a fleck of dandruff, but they do not come off the hair shaft unless you scrape them with your fingernail

Nits feel like a grain of sand stuck to the hair

Lice Check – Screening at School if Lice is Suspected:

Assess the child at a time when the health room is empty or at the end of the day

Children with nits only will be allowed to return to the classroom

A child with visible live lice will be excluded from school

If a child has confirmed live head lice, any siblings or other children living in the home will be assessed

Entire classrooms and buses will no longer be assessed

Lice Check – Remember:

Live lice crawl – they do not jump or fly

Lice cannot survive off the head. They usually die in 1-2 days. Nits off the hair shaft die within hours

A home, room or school cannot be chemically treated for lice. Wash/launder any clothing/towels/bed linens in the hot wash/rinse cycle and vacuum any furniture or flooring and don’t forget to clean the car!
