(10/25/18) - "Mappen" text messages
Published on Oct 25, 2018 11:48

Dear Cumberland Valley families,

We have become aware of students, staff, and community residents who late last evening and this morning began to receive text alerts that give an appearance to have been auto-generated from a social media/mapping app called Mappen.

The text message indicates that the recipient has been tagged in Mappen and that “friends from Cumberland Valley High want to hang out after school.” The message includes a link to download the app. Indications are that many of the individuals who are receiving this text message do not currently use this app.

We strongly encourage recipients to exercise caution when receiving and potentially clicking on links from unknown sources. These links could potentially reveal personal information, including location, and could possibly compromise information contained on your personal communication device.

As a general reminder, any application that utilizes location sharing services could potentially reveal your current and past locations to unknown individuals. It is strongly recommended that you check the location services settings for each application downloaded to both your personal device and to your child’s device. Within these location services settings, selecting “never” for social media applications prevents your location from possibly being shared with others.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we partner together in these important safety efforts.

Sincerely,

Michael Sokolas
Director of Student and Public Safety
