From the School Nurse:

It’s that time of year again! Now that school (daycare/before and after school care too) is back in session, please check your children for lice and ticks on a continuous basis.

Lice Check:

Lice do not cause serious health issues.
Lice in most cases have been on the child's head for 1 month before being discovered.
Prevention of lice transmission should be consistently practiced (avoid head to head contact, instruct child not to share personal belongings, avoid shared spaces).
The Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) recommend not excluding or allowing children to miss school due to head lice.

What to look for:

Signs of infestation are head scratching or a sudden appearance of white specks in the hair.
The white specks may be the nits or eggs that the head louse has laid.
Nits may be found on the hair shaft about 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from the scalp and are found more often behind the ears, in bangs, and at the base of the neck.
Eggs or nits look like a fleck of dandruff, but they do not come off the hair shaft unless you scrape them with your fingernail.
Nits feel like a grain of sand stuck to the hair.

Screening at school if Lice is suspected:

Assess child at a time when the health room is empty or at the end of the day.
Children with nits only will be allowed to return to the classroom.
A child with visible live lice will be excluded from school.
If a child has confirmed live head lice, any siblings or other children living in the home will be assessed.
Entire classrooms and buses will no longer be assessed.

Remember:

Live lice crawl--they do not jump or fly
Lice cannot survive off the head. They usually die in 1-2 days. Nits off the hair shaft die within hours.
A home, room or school cannot be chemically treated for lice. However, please remember to bag up any bags or pillows at home that cannot be laundered for a 2 week period. Wash/launder any clothing/towels/bed linens in the hot wash/rinse cycle and vacuum any furniture or flooring and don’t forget the car to remove any hair that may have any louse/nits attached.

Tick Check:

Remember they like to hide, so feel for bumps from head to toe. It’s important to do this every day, but especially when you have been outside playing and walking around in weeds or woody areas.

  1. Scalp
  2. In and behind the ears
  3. Behind the neck
  4. Under arms
  5. Between fingers
  6. Waist and back
  7. Bellybutton
  8. Pelvic and groin area
  9. Behind knees
  10. Between toes
