Hello Middlesex Families,
Continuing with the idea of a Growth Mindset, Embrace the word “Yet.”
As Dweck herself puts it, “Just the words
‘yet’ or ‘not yet,’ we're finding, give kids greater confidence, give them a
path into the future that creates greater persistence.” According to her
research, simply leaving possibilities wide open has the power to jolt kids out
of a fixed mindset and into a growth mindset.
Just adding “yet” to a despairing sentence
like “I can’t,” changes its meaning and opens doors for growth and opportunity.
Similar thoughts, like, “I can’t do complex multiplication,” and, “I can’t hit
the baseball” take on very different meanings with the addition of that one
word. This linguistic trick implies that kids can and will master these skills;
it’s just a matter of time and effort. Sesame Street even created a music video
about The Power of Yet to promote that message.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART:
It’s time for Jump Rope Heart! Did
you know that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of all Americans, 80% of it may
be preventable through lifestyle changes? Hoops for Heart will teach your child
the importance of heart-healthy habits – a foundation for the rest of
his/her life. This service-learning program will also share with your child the
inspirational stories of children who have been touched by this disease while
they raise funds to help kids like them, and save and
improve all lives.
Here’s how it works:
• Your child has received his/her
fundraising envelope. Start by setting up a personal fundraising page—easy
directions are on the back of the letter.
• Ask family and
friends if they’d like to donate. Not sure what to say? Your child can use the
simple script on the collection envelope.
• Encourage your child to get ready to
jump and have fun at our school event! The event will take place during
their next PE class and ending February 21st. Money is due February 21st.
As part of Jump
Rope For Heart event, your child
will choose a
heart-healthy message and share lifesaving
tips. There is even a parent corner with tips on
keeping your children healthy at home!
Through this special event,
your school can earn money for PE equipment and your child earns fun prizes
that encourage him/her to keep up the good work for heart health. PLEASE
DO NOT SEND IN CASH WITH YOUR STUDENT!!! ONLY CHECKS AND ONLINE DONATIONS WILL
BE RECEIVED.

new curriculum that will meet current and future employment needs. Professionals
enrolled in the Leadership Cumberland program (fellows) are developing surveys
for area school district superintendents to distribute. Cumberland Valley, West
Shore, Carlisle Area, and Mechanicsburg Area School Districts have all agreed to
participate in order to provide a sample representative for the county. Parents,
