Spanish II Cuban Cooking Event at Eagle View Middle School

Spanish II students at Eagle View prepared, cooked and enjoyed culinary creations upon completion of a unit on Cuban food and cooking.  The student groups chose to make la ropa vieja, las croquetas (de pollo), el arroz con pollo, and la tarta de tres leches.  Many thanks to Spanish teacher Sra. Blouch and FCS teacher Ms. Morret for supporting this cultural experience!

National Foreign Language Week

First Full Week in March, Annually

National Foreign Language Week (NFLW) was inaugurated in the Spring of 1957 when it was discovered that such a week had never been officially celebrated in the United States as a whole, although foreign language had received recognition by different educational institutions at various periods of the academic year. The goal of NFLW is to promote the need for and importance of foreign language study. The first celebration was set for the week of February 17th to the 23rd, 1957. Every year since, a week, generally the first full week of March, has been set aside for this event.2018 Decorated Locker

On December 12th, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent a telegram endorsing the celebration, and each succeeding president has added his support. An even greater contribution to the success of NFLW was made by the posters of the late Bruce Russell, who received not only the Pulitzer Prize but also recognition from President Eisenhower for his efforts toward greater world understanding through his timely cartoons. He offered a cartoon each year until his death in 1963, and even left one finished drawing and an unfinished sketch that were used in 1964 and 1966 respectively. These posters have been distributed each year throughout the United States.

At Cumberland Valley, students have the opportunity to celebrate National Foreign Language Week in a variety of ways. Students at each middle school and at the high school participate in an assignment with a menu of options to recognize, promote, and celebrate foreign languages. Books and other resources promoting the study of language are on display in the library of each building. Individual teachers include other special activities or discussions as part of their lessons during this week of celebration.
