WELCOME TO THE ELEMENTARY MUSIC CLASSROOM!
The purpose of elementary general music is to develop lifelong learners and participants in music. Through a variety of experiences, students will gain an understanding of musical concepts and skills which will foster musicality and appreciation.
The National Standards for Music Education are the basis for the Cumberland Valley music curriculum. Elementary music educators teach the curriculum through a variety of tools that include, but are not limited to: the child's voice and melodic or rhythmic instruments.
Students in third grade learn to play the recorder. The recorder introduces students to the mechanics of learning to play an instrument, provides a musical ensemble experience and reinforces music concepts learned in the classroom. Fourth and fifth grade students participate in chorus, where they extend their knowledge and skills of classroom concepts. Chorus also provides the first public stage experience for many students. Concerts are presented in January and May.
The elementary music curriculum is based upon a continuum of learning. Concepts and skills introduced at one grade level are reinforced and refined at each subsequent grade. Students are assessed on skills in three main categories: (1) pitch and melody (2) rhythmic skills, and (3) application of music skills and concepts.
