(12.17.20) COVID-19 MESSAGE - MO

Dear Monroe Elementary School Families,

Cumberland Valley School District administration has been notified of an additional positive case of COVID-19 involving Monroe staff member who was last present in the building on December 7, 2020, and subsequently tested positive.

At this time, we have had two cases with exposure at Monroe Elementary School in the past 14 days.  Because of this, we are required to close Monroe for three to five days based on the threshold matrix issued last month by the Department of Education.

Monroe Elementary School will remain in remote learning from tomorrow, Friday, December 18, 2020, through January 8, 2021.

During this time, the building will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, even beyond the regular and extensive cleanings that already occur daily. New cases will continue to be evaluated to determine if there were any close contacts in the building as well. Please continue to report positive cases of individuals (students or staff) so this work can be completed.

Teachers will communicate directly with families regarding educational activities during the face-to-face closure. Monroe will re-open for face-to-face instruction on Monday, January 11, 2021. Ongoing case counts at Monroe will reset to zero (0) on January 11, 2021, because of the extended closure for face-to-face instruction, which should improve the likelihood of remaining open at Monroe in January.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health, together with Cumberland Valley School District, will lead the contact tracing investigation. Individuals identified as close contacts will be contacted by PA DoH and/or Cumberland Valley administration by tomorrow evening, December 18, 2020. If an individual is not contacted by PA DoH and/or CV, the individual is not considered to be a close contact. Please be aware that Cumberland Valley School District has multiple employees who are certified contact tracers.

  • Close contact is defined by the CDC as anyone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total time of 15 minutes starting from 48 hours before the person began feeling sick until the time the patient was isolated.

  • Students/Staff who are notified by the Cumberland Valley administration or PA DoH that they were a close contact will be required to quarantine for up to 14 days from their last possible day of exposure.

Please know that we sincerely understand that this message may cause some concern. Remain assured that we will continue to closely monitor this situation and will provide additional information as needed. If you have questions, please contact the school office or your child’s building principal.

As always, we sincerely appreciate your continued support and understanding.

(12.7.20) UPDATED GUIDANCE FROM PA DOH

Dear Cumberland Valley Families,

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has issued updated guidance pertaining to quarantine of individuals who have been exposed to a positive case of COVID-19. This updated guidance reflects changes made last week by the Centers for Disease Control.

Under the new DoH guidance, the quarantine period for asymptomatic individuals has been shortened from 14 days to 10 days from date of exposure, as long as no symptoms were reported during daily monitoring. Under the new guidance, the quarantine period for asymptomatic individuals can be further reduced to no less than seven days as long as a negative COVID-19 test result is produced and specific testing criteria are met.

Cumberland Valley School District will follow this new guidance.

It is important to note that the District views this guidance as applicable to simple COVID-19 exposures that are limited to one incident of exposure, not complex ongoing exposure as might be seen in a family that is unable to isolate a COVID-19 positive family member. A complex exposure of this nature may require additional quarantine time based on many factors that are best evaluated by trained contact tracers at CVSD or the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

As we have said before, we will remain vigilant in monitoring students at school for onset of symptoms, in addition to providing regular reminders about the importance of safe physical distancing, face coverings, regular hand washing, and proper hygiene. But we cannot do this alone. We ask that you continue to monitor your child daily for symptoms (view our Eagles Wellness Checklist here) and keep them home if they exhibit any of the symptoms on the checklist.

Additionally, please use our COVID-19 student reporting form to notify us should your child test positive.

With sincere appreciation,

David E. Christopher, Ed.D
Superintendent of Schools

(12.4.20) UPDATE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Cumberland Valley Families,

Below is a table of cases of COVID-19 that have been reported by students or staff (or the PA DoH) to the District in the past two weeks. Cases with exposure are cases where an individual tested positive for COVID-19 and was believed to have been contagious while in a CVSD school building. At this time, all school buildings would be eligible to be open based on criteria established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. However, due to an inability to provide face-to-face teachers at Mountain View Middle School (multiple staff members are currently quarantining due to COVID-19 exposure, symptoms, or have tested positive), Mountain View will remain in remote learning only for the week of December 7, 2020.

Please know that we sincerely understand that this message may cause some concern. Remain assured that we will continue to closely monitor this situation and will provide additional information as needed. If you have questions, please contact the school office.

(12.1.20) UPDATE REGARDING TEMPERATURE CHECKS

Dear CV Families,

Recent reports indicate that surface temperature thermometers, like those that we use to take student temperatures each morning, are not effective when used outdoors, especially when the air is cooler. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control has indicated that temperature checks are not a reliable predictor of COVID-19. You may view CDC school screening considerations by clicking here.

As a result, we will no longer perform temperature checks as students enter our school buildings. We will, however, continue to be vigilant in monitoring students at school for onset of symptoms, in addition to providing regular reminders about the importance of safe physical distancing, face coverings, regular hand washing, and proper hygiene.

We would ask that on the days your child attends school face-to-face, you also continue to complete our Eagles Wellness Checklist prior to your child boarding a bus or entering school for the day. If your child exhibits any of the symptoms on the checklist, they should not attend school that day. You may view the wellness checklist by clicking here.

As always, we sincerely appreciate your partnership with us to ensure the health and safety of all of our students and staff. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s building principal should you have any questions.

Thank you,

David E. Christopher, Ed.D.
