WELCOME TO THE HOME PAGE FOR THE READING CLINIC.  THE READING CLINICIAN WORKS WITH SMALL GROUPS OF KINDERGARTEN, FIRST AND SECOND GRADE CHILDREN. THE CHILDREN ARE INCLUDED IN CLINIC BASED UPON THE RESULTS OF ASSESSMENT DATA AND TEACHER RECOMMENDATION.   MOST GROUPS ARE A COMBINATION OF "PUSH-IN" AND/ OR "PULL-OUT", WITH 3 CHILDREN TO A GROUP, 3-4 TIMES A WEEK WHEN POSSIBLE.

SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION FOCUSES ON THE BASIC BUILDING BLOCKS OF READING AND WRITING, AND INCLUDES:  PHONEMIC AWARENESS AND PHONICS (WORD ANALYSIS SKILLS); VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT; COMPREHENSION AND READING STRATEGIES; FLUENCY; AND WRITTEN TASKS THAT SUPPORT LITERACY DEVELOPMENT.

THE PROGRAM FOR SECOND GRADE FOCUSES ON:

  • PRACTICING AND REINFORCING READING STRATEGIES
  • READING AND RECOGNIZING A VARIETY OF LITERATURE GENRES   
  • STRATEGIES FOR READING LONGER TEXTS (CHAPTER BOOKS)
  • READING FOR INFORMATION, AND LOCATING INFORMATION IN TEXT 
  • WORDWORK (PHONICS) AND VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT
  • WRITING (SENTENCES, PARAGRAPHS, REPORTS)

               

 

THE FOCUS OF THE FIRST GRADE PROGRAM IS  TO LEARN AND PRACTICE STRATEGIC BEHAVIORS THAT WILL ENABLE THE CHILD TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT READER AND WRITER.  THE FIRST GRADE PROGRAM INCLUDES:

  • WORD WORK (MAKING WORDS, HEARING SOUNDS IN WORDS, RHYMING, ALLITERATION)
  • DEVELOPING SIGHT VOCABULARY FOR READING AND WRITING 
  • PRACTICING READING STRATEGIES THAT SUPPORT MEANING
  • READING FICTION AND NON-FICTION TEXTS WITH COMPREHENSION
  • READING FLUENTLY WITH EXPRESSION AND PHRASING 
  • USING GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS TO RE-TELL OR WRITE ABOUT TEXT

 

THE KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM INCLUDES:

  • LITERATURE BASED LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES (SUCH AS RECOGNIZING RHYME, LISTENING TO STORIES, PREDICTING AND RETELLING)
  • LETTER-SOUND RECOGNITION ACTIVITIES 
  • HEARING SOUNDS IN WORDS FOR WRITING AND READING
  • DEVELOPING SIGHT VOCABULARY 
  • LEARNING BASIC STRATEGIES THAT SUPPORT INDEPENDENT READING
