Welcome to third grade and our classroom web page.
I hope this will be a wonderful resource for you and your child.
Third grade is a transitional year for the children. The children become more independent workers. Cooperative group lessons are common in science and social studies. The children more fully understand the connection between their work and the grades they earn.
In language arts, reading comprehension skills become more complex and involve higher level thinking skills. There are some grammar lessons which touch on parts of speech and correct usage of capitalization and punctuation. Types of writings are explored, such as personal narratives, persuasive paragraphs, and informational writings. The children also learn how to write a response to what they have read.
The children learn all of the upper and lower case letters in cursive writing. By the end of the year, all of their work is completed in cursive.
Math is often a favorite subject for children of this age. Regrouping in both addition and subtraction is mastered. Multiplication and division concepts and facts are exciting for third graders. Other topics include fractions, geometry, telling time, and counting money. Quite a bit of time is devoted to developing problem solving strategies.
The children study four areas in science. They are sound, measurement, earth materials, and water. The theme in social studies is communities. Many new vocabulary words are introduced.
I think third grade is a very exciting time. The children grow and develop in so many ways. They still enjoy their sharing time, but mature into responsible learners. Together, we can make this a great year for your child!
