THIRD GRADE
Third Grade at Sporting Hill Elementary is loaded with fun, educationally sound activities. For example, in mathematics we do computational work with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Plus we work with measurement, geometry, expressions, and word problems. Our math curriculum is packed with quality lessons and many resources for students, teachers, and parents. Our language arts curriculum includes phonics lessons, grammar lessons, reading instruction, and written expression. We participate in Book-It for a full six months. Book-It is a national reading incentive program sponsored by Pizza Hut, and the kids love to read and earn the monthly prizes. Our language arts students will participate in guided reading, write stories, and read award-winning trade books, both fiction and nonfiction. Like mathematics, our language arts curriculum is wonderful. It's rich with skill lessons, fiction and nonfiction stories, comprehension lessons, information about the authors, and so much more. The students really enjoy learning from our guided reading and guided writing language programs.
Third grade is a big transition year with more responsibility expected from the children. Homework becomes a very important part of the educational process for third graders. Homework is given on a regular basis as are consequences for not completing homework. Students are expected to record all homework assignments in their homework assignment book and have the book signed nightly by a parent or caregiver.
