Permit Study Guide
How to study for the test

Frequently asked questions:

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

What is on the test?

You will be tested on signs, laws, driving rules and safe practices described in the PA Driver’s Manual.

Most of the potential questions on the test are in the PA Driver’s Manual or at www.dmv.state.pa.us . Look for the Information Center -Teen Drivers –PA Driver’s Manual.

Do I need to study?

Yes. Even if you are familiar with signs, laws, driving rules and safe driving practices, you should look over the questions in the PA Driver's Manual or online. It is only fair to the person who is taking you for the test that you do your best. It is a long drive there and back especially if you don't get your permit because you did not study! This happens all too frequently.

How is the test administered?

The test is computer touch screen based. Each applicant is given 18 random test questions. You may skip a question but if it comes up again you must answer it. To pass, you must answer 15 out of 18 questions correctly.

Must everyone take the test on the computer?

Everyone must start on the computer. If an applicant fails multiple times there are other forms of the test that can be administered. The adult accompanying the applicant or the applicant can  inquire about the options.
