The purpose of elementary general music is to develop lifelong learners and participants in music.  Through a variety of experiences, students will gain an understanding of musical concepts and skills which will foster musicality and appreciation.

The National Standards for Music Education are the basis for the Cumberland Valley music curriculum.  Elementary music educators teach the curriculum through a variety of tools that include, but are not limited to: the child’s voice and melodic or rhythmic instruments.  Fourth and fifth grade students participate in chorus as an extension of the curriculum. 

Students are assessed on skills in three main categories: (1) pitch and melody, (2) rhythmic skills, and (3) application of music skills and concepts.
