Principal's Message

Sporting Hill is one of the seven elementary schools in the Cumberland Valley School District. Our new building was completed in November of 1996. Parents and children helped move us from our old building to our new one and this building has been in almost constant use by students and the community since it was completed.

Our location beside the Hampden Township pool complex makes us very easy to find. Sporting Hill is a kindergarten through fifth grade building with approximately eighty staff working to make our educational programs successful.

Students have access to art, music, physical education, band, chorus, library, and computer instruction. We have a full time nurse and guidance counselor. We share one of the district psychologists. Our building also has five learning support teachers and an instructor for the gifted. We  have a Title I reading program.  We have a literacy coach who works with staff and students to improve reading and writing skills. A full time speech clinician supports students in the areas of  language development and articulation.

We offer looping classrooms for first and second grade students as one option in the primary grades. Parents can select to have their children assigned to a classroom where the students and teacher stay together for two years. They also have the option to select classrooms where children have a teacher for only one year.

During the 2004-05 school year we began an Extended Day Kindergarten program. Children are selected for the additional learning time to help them improve skills that will enable them to be successful in kindergarten. All kindergarten students are screened using the Bracken Basic Concept Scale, a speech and language screening, phonemic awareness checks, AimsWeb screening, and teacher observation.

Our school population encompasses a broad spectrum, which has given our students the wonderful opportunity to learn from the great wealth of experiences we all share. We are a big school with a big heart. Our parents’ organization is very active and provides excellent support to the staff and children.

For information that supports the curriculum at the elementary level you may want to check the following web sites:  Harcourt (social studies), Houghton Mifflin (math), FOSS (science), and Pearson (language arts). During the 2009-10 school year the district is piloting two new math programs (Envision and Math Expressions).
