What is a School Resource Officer (SRO)
An SRO is a certified law enforcement officer assigned to a school district to help provide a safe learning environment for all students, staff and visitors. In addition to law enforcement opportunites, an SRO also serves as a role model for students, presents workshops for students and staff, and aworks with staff and administration to develop safety and security procedures.

Purpose of the SRO
An SRO is not a replacement for a existing school security practices. School security is much more involved than just a uniform and badge. An SRO is not a classroom disciplinarian, however, will work hand-in-hand with staff to address any discipline needs when necessary.

Common Roles of an SRO
An SRO provides a program of educational leadership to the students, parents and faculty addressing safety issues in the school community, violence prevetion, crime prevention, and violence difussion. An SRO also will take steps appropriate and consistent with a law enforcement officer's duty when a crime occurs.

Goals of the SRO Program
-- Bridge the gap between law enforcement officers and increase positive attitudes toward law    enforcement.
-- Teach the value of our legal system.
-- Promote respect for people and property.
-- Reduce juveline crime by helping students formulate an awareness of rules, authority and justice.
-- Take a personal interest in students and their activies.
-- Give students a realistic picture of local laws and legal system.
-- Teach students how to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
-- Teach crime prevention.

What training is required of an SRO
All SRO's attend a training program to become certified. The main emphasis is on functioning as a police officer in a school setting, working as a resource and problem solver, and developing teaching skills.
