** SEE BELOW FOR RELATED MATERIALS, LINKS ** 11/9/09: H1N1 vaccines to continue throughout November, early December Cumberland Valley School District last week offered H1N1 vaccines to its elementary students, and will continue to administer vaccinations throughout the next several weeks to secondary students, staff, elementary students who require a second dose, and to others in the district eligible for the vaccine. The schedule of remaining vaccinations is a follows: 10/30/09: Vaccines to be administered beginning 11/2/09 Cumberland Valley School District has received a shipment of H1N1 vaccines and will begin to administer doses to students with signed consent forms on Monday, Nov. 2. A Saturday clinic is scheduled for Nov. 14. The district has received 10,000 doses of the H1N1 injection (flu shot) vaccine and 2,800 doses of the nasal (flu mist) vaccine. Because of the limited number of flu mist vaccines, priority for those vaccines will be to students in kindergarten and first grade. It is not expected that any additional flu mist vaccines will be received. Therefore, any parent of a student in grades two through five who completed a consent form indicating nasal only may reconsider the injection (flu shot) by sending a signed and dated note to school with their child. Schedule of vaccination is as follows: Children ages five to nine must receive a second dose of the vaccine 21 to 28 days after the initial vaccine. More information on specific dates for the second dose of vaccines will follow. The Saturday clinic will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Eagle View Middle School cafeteria. Any student under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Additionally, a signed consent form and proof of residency must also be provided. Only the injection (flu shot) will be available at this clinic. Parents need not be present for vaccinations administered in the school building during school hours. Please contact your child’s school nurse for more information on the vaccine or virus. Additional informational links and vaccine consent forms are available at www.cvschools.org/swineflu. 10/23/09: Vaccine and community meeting information available Please click the links to the left to view information pertaining to the availability of the H1N1 vaccine at CV and presentations that were shown during a community meeting on Oct. 22. 10/20/09: Flu update The following CV E-news was sent to parents: We are writing to you this evening with an update regarding influenza in our schools, as we believe it is the responsibility of the district to keep parents informed. While daily absenteeism is decreasing at schools such as Cumberland Valley High School, numbers are on the rise at schools such as Hampden, Silver Spring and Good Hope. To date, the district has had a total of approximately 265 students district-wide with the flu. We recognize this number seems high, but please understand this only represents approximately 3½ percent of our total district-wide student enrollment.
District administration continues to be in contact with the PA Department of Health. Further, we are following all guidance from the DOH and Centers for Disease Control. Schools will remain open and operate as normal.
The district will continue its stringent cleansing guidelines, and will continue to educate children and staff about the importance of healthy hygiene. Further, we will remain in contact with local physicians who are also monitoring numbers and recognize an influx in the number of patients presenting with flu-like symptoms.
We ask that you continue your proactive efforts to ensure your child’s health. Recommendations to help prevent the spread of the flu include:
-- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or sleeve.
-- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
-- Avoid close contact that can spread the virus: hugging, kissing or even shaking hands if you think you are sick.
-- Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to prevent them from getting sick.
-- If you are sick, stay home from work, school and errands; Keep sick children at home; and always consult a health care provider.
Please also remember that it is equally as important to keep sick children home as it is to send your healthy child to school.
Students who come to school with flu symptoms will be evaluated by our nursing staff and sent home if necessary. Further, any student who is sick with the flu should remain home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
Flu-like symptoms include: usually fever, muscle aches, fatigue and coughing; they may also include vomiting and diarrhea.

The meeting will provide an overview of the H1N1 virus, in addition to steps schools and communities are taking to ensure the health and safety of children. Also of topic will be actions parents can take at home to help reduce the spread of the virus. The community meeting is free of charge and open to the public.

The district has been in contact with officials from the Department of Health regarding the increase in students with flu or flu-like symptoms. All schools will remain open and operate as normal.
As recommended by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, we are asking parents to remain vigilant in keeping home any child who exhibits flu-like symptoms.
