Published on Sep 18, 2017 21:22

(September 18, 2017) - We are pleased to announce that at tonight’s meeting the Board of School Directors voted to hire Mark Blanchard as the Executive Director of Cumberland Valley High School.

In anticipation of current high school principal Judy Baumgardner's retirement at the end of the 2017-18 school year, District administration began the search for her successor last spring. This was a process that included a lengthy search, a highly competitive field of candidates, and a thorough vetting. Throughout the selection process, Mr. Blanchard demonstrated that he is a proven instructional leader who can inspire educators to take risks and empower learners to be self-directed and guide their own learning.

Mr. Blanchard will partner with Mrs. Baumgardner throughout the year to familiarize himself with CV High School, our students and staff, and our programs. He will formally transition into the position in July 2018. As the Executive Director of the High School, Mr. Blanchard will lead the development and implementation of a shared vision to promote excellence and support transformation throughout the organization.

Mr. Blanchard has been working as a high school principal for 13 years, after spending eight years as a high school English teacher. His teaching career began at West Shore Christian Academy followed by Central Dauphin High School. He also served as an assistant principal at Cumberland Valley High School before becoming the building principal at Gettysburg Area High School, where he has been the past 10 years. During Mr. Blanchard’s time at GAHS, he has emphasized increasing post-secondary opportunities for all students by growing significantly the programs in Advanced Placement, dual enrollment, vocational training, and College in the High School.

After finishing his undergraduate work at Baptist Bible College, Mr. Blanchard completed his Master’s degree and principal certification program at Penn State University and his superintendent program at Shippensburg University. He is currently finishing his doctoral work at George Washington University in the area of Advanced Placement opportunities. He currently works with Shippensburg University, regularly presenting seminars and guest lectures in the School of Education Administration and Teacher Preparation and has done the same at Penn State University-Harrisburg, Gettysburg College, and Messiah College.
