From the Nurse:

Kindergarten and New Students in First Grade
PA Health Regulations require elementary students to have a dental exam and physical exam upon entering school. Written reports must be on file to verify this requirement.  Notification letters were sent home last week.  Please return forms as soon as possible.

Dental exam forms are required in Third grade. Notification letters were sent home last week.  Please return the form as soon as possible.

Medications
Medicine should be given at home when possible, either before or after school. When a prescription medication needs to be given at school, we must comply with PA regulations and CVSD policies. A Dr’s order in writing and written parent permission is required each school year. Medicine must in original bottles / boxes with pharmacy label. Please supply an extra labeled bottle for field trips. Go to the CV website or contact the office if you need a medication form.

Cough Drops 
For safety reasons elementary students are not allowed to carry cough drops in school.  Cough drops must be given to the nurse or teacher and written permission is required from a parent / guardian.

Health Prevention
Now that the temperatures are colder and the air dryer, students are missing class time due to chapped and painful lips, some to the point of cracking and bleeding.  The cold air will be here for the next 6 months and heating the building will add to drying the air and dehydrating the skin.  Compounding the problem is the licking of lips.  This is detrimental since digestive enzymes in saliva break down the skin on the lips and around the mouth.  Parents can help by providing each student with a lip balm for their backpack or jacket pocket and promoting the use of lip protection as self- care of the skin, like brushing teeth and shampooing hair. 
As an alternative to licking lips during the day, adults should encourage students to take sips of water which will moisten the lips and hydrate the body.
