Weather decision during extreme temperatures
Published on Jan 30, 2019 12:16

Dear CV families:

(1/30/19) - The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory through tomorrow morning. The advisory indicates that Cumberland County could experience below zero wind chills. With that in mind, how cold is too cold to have school? Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question. As indicated by the National Weather Service, frostbite can occur on areas of exposed skin in a short period of time during extreme cold.

Please know that we will continue to monitor forecasts and, if needed, consider a delayed opening or closure. In addition to the health risks as mentioned earlier, we must also make sure that the extreme temperatures do not lead to bus or building mechanical failures that are out of our control.

Please know that, as always, any decision regarding a delay or closure will be made with the safety and well-being of our students and staff in mind.

We are sharing this information in advance so that our parents and guardians can plan ahead in the event that there is a school delay or closing due to the extreme temperatures this week. With this in mind, we strongly encourage families to review their emergency plans so that – in the event of an unexpected bus delay - children recognize under what circumstances and conditions you would expect them to return home or to the home of a trusted neighbor.

Additionally, we strongly encourage bus riders to make sure to dress and prepare appropriately for the temperatures. Please feel free to visit our website for a list of recommended tips from our Nursing Department on safe dress for weather conditions. If you know of any students who may be in need of a winter coat, hat, or gloves, please do not hesitate to contact your school's principal or guidance counselor. Your call will remain anonymous and we are happy to share winter items from CV's Angel Closet.

With sincere appreciation,

Dr. Frederick Withum, III
Superintendent of Schools
