(3/20 & 22/18) - A letter from the Superintendent
Posted on 03/20/2018
(3/22/18): Following is the text of an automated telephone message that was sent to CV parents and guardians from Dr. Frederick Withum, Superintendent of Schools.

Dear Cumberland Valley Community:

I am calling you today with an update to the phone message you received from me on Tuesday evening regarding threatening graffiti scrawled on a bathroom stall at CV High school. While the investigation has continued, we have not yet been able to identify the individual responsible for writing this message. However, neither administration nor police have received any information to substantiate the threat.

School will continue as scheduled on Friday, March 23, 2018. As shared in my last communication, we have requested – as an added layer of security – that local law enforcement increase their presence on Friday in and around all of our district buildings. Our School Resource Officer – a police officer with Silver Spring Township – continues to be available for our students and staff.

I both understand and respect that this phone call may cause your family some anxiety. While we have no information to substantiate the threat, I know that each of you must make a personal decision that is best for your family in regards to sending your child to school tomorrow. Absences will be handled in accordance with district policy and the student handbook. Examples of excused absences include but are not limited to illness, family emergencies, and medical appointments.

I again ask parents and students to remain vigilant and to immediately report any activity that may be considered concerning. I also ask that you please remain assured that any student found responsible for making threats of violence will face consequences as allowable by both district policy and law.

I sincerely appreciate your support.

Dear Cumberland Valley Community:

I am writing to make you aware that administration has been notified of graffiti scrawled on a bathroom stall at CV High School. The message - threatening in nature - referenced CV High School and the date of March 23, 2018.

As the result of quick actions by a student who discovered the graffiti, administration was able to investigate with consultation from Silver Spring Township Police Department. While the investigation into a suspect is ongoing, neither administration nor police have received information at this time to substantiate the threat.

None-the-less, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors to our schools is of paramount priority and - as an added layer of security - I have asked local law enforcement to increase their presence in and around both the high school and all other district buildings on Friday. Additionally, our School Resource Officer - a police officer with Silver Spring Township - continues to be available for our students and staff.

As we continue to partner to keep our schools safe, I ask parents and students today and every day to immediately report any activity that may be considered concerning.

With sincere appreciation,

Dr. Frederick S. Withum III
Superintendent of Schools
