Overview

We hope this communication finds you, and your loved ones, healthy and happy! It is our intention for this document to serve as a beginning framework for the intended plan of elementary remote learning. This is certainly an unprecedented new adventure for all of us. The District recognizes that it cannot fully replicate schooling in the remote setting. Furthermore, we know that the younger the student, the more difficult it becomes to teach them remotely. However, we are committed to creating the best possible experience for students, families, and staff. The chart below displays the general overview of our remote learning implementation plan. Further down the document we outline initial information as we roll into this new style of teaching and learning.

Nothing about this experience is normal, so we must stay patient and accept there will be challenges and mistakes along the way. The partnership between the school staff and our families is critically important.

Parents/Guardians: We realize that many of you are doing “double duty." You are being tasked to partner with us to support the education of your student, coupled with the fact that you must still work and/or manage a household. We are cognizant of this challenge. We attempted to build a system which will be effective, but also simple, clear, efficient, and easy to manage for all families. We pledge to support you throughout this process. We also plan to provide significant flexibility for families, and in turn, we ask that you also provide us with a similar level of flexibility.

Students: Please be kind to your teachers, your classmates, and your family members. We understand if you may be a little worried about learning remotely or sad about missing school. To be honest, we are too.

We sincerely thank you for your patience, understanding, and never ending support as we navigate these uncharted waters!

Getting Started

  • Establish structure and routines in your household.
  • Create a distraction free work-space with your child. Your child’s focus is influenced by noise, hunger, exhaustion, conversation, electronics, and interest in the activity or subject they’re working on. Creating a distraction free space with everyone at home can be challenging so do the best you can. Be patient and keep a sense of humor.
  • Encourage “brain breaks” and exercise opportunities for your student.
  • Reinforce the need for consistent sleep patterns.
  • Parents can have the flexibility to engage the children during the day, afternoon, or evening - whatever suits their schedule and situation.
  • Provide encouragement and support. If your child is feeling overwhelmed or confused reassure them that learning takes time and mistakes are okay. Students, don’t be afraid to tell others when you’re frustrated, upset, or sad. Work hard, just like you do in school, and be persistent when problems arise. Most importantly, know there are many adults who care about you and want to help you succeed.
  • Whenever possible, create balance in the day so that students are not sitting and/or online for hours at a time.
  • Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher, counselor, or principal for assistance.

Definitions:

There are two models for remote teaching and learning:

  • Synchronous: Students and teachers working together and interacting in a digital space concurrently.
  • Asynchronous: Teachers post direct instruction videos and learning materials online. Students engage with class materials and complete work at their own pace within a given 1 week interval

  • Ask questions, be persistent, and work to solve problems that may occur. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or tell others when you're frustrated or upset, but know that you can’t simply give up, either.
  • Engage in all learning with academic honesty and integrity.
  • Students and parents should stay informed by regularly checking email, daily as appropriate. Teachers will respond to all email communication as quickly as possible.
  • If you’re going to participate in a Zoom video session with video enabled, please dress appropriately for school and make sure there is nothing behind you that you don’t want others to see. All communication (through audio, video, still photos...) and behavior on a Zoom video session follow the same expectations as in regular face-to-face schooling.
  • Similar to school, students are expected to comply with all procedures outlined in the elementary handbook and school board policy. This includes proper digital citizenship. Treating others well is important online, just like it is in the classroom, and good choices also involve being safe. Student discipline is handled the same way in an online environment as it is in school. If a student’s behavior is inappropriate, it will be brought to the attention of the administrator.
