One District One Book

Our school is excited to join seven other elementary schools in our district for a special opportunity for our students and families. We invite everyone to take part in our annual "One District, One Book Experience" over the next few weeks. In summary, we will provide all families and staff with a copy of the same book, and a schedule featuring the book will be sent home on February 5th. This schedule will help guide your family as you read the book in the coming weeks.

School events during this period will include opportunities for students to discuss the book, such as a kick-off classroom-based virtual assembly, daily trivia, and family engagement activities. Additionally, there will be special events and other ways for families to participate beyond just reading the book. More details will be shared soon!

As parents, we request that you read every word of the book out loud as a family, regardless of whether your child is in kindergarten or fifth grade. For a few weeks, we ask you to make reading this book an extra special nightly event in your home.

Why is this important? According to Readtothem.org, "The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable! Studies have shown that reading to children helps them listen better and longer, build better vocabularies, understand concepts better, and feel positive about both books and learning, among other things. When an entire school reads the same book, the buzz and excitement around the book being read increases these benefits, and there is the added joy of building community in the school family." This is in addition to the benefit of spending quality time with your children while promoting the advantages of reading and education!

The big question: How can a fifth grader and kindergartner read the same book? The simple truth is they can't all read it, but if it is read to them, they can all enjoy a good story.

Visit our district’s website! A dedicated page on our website features videos of each chapter being read aloud, all the information sent home, a few of the pictures we are collecting along the way, and much more!
