Spring Semester 2018

- JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC), June 4-8.  During this period, 10 Cumberland Valley HS cadets attended JCLC to develop their leadership skills and gain experience, while participating in adventure skills training with cadets from 10 area schools.  All of the cadets did very well and earned their JCLC ribbons/tabs and their Recondo tabs.  Congratulations to Cadets Rabanal, White, Beu, and Olenick for being selected as the Honor Cadet within their respective platoons.  

- Silver Spring Memorial Day Ceremony, May 28th.
 Five JROTC cadets participated in this ceremony at Willow Mill Park by presenting the wreath, raising the flag, and reading the names of service members on the new memorial bricks.  This moving tribute to service members who have given their lives for our country which also included: a speech about Memorial Day and the playing of Taps.  A "well done" to the cadets who supported the event.

- Monroe Township Memorial Day Celebration, May 28th.  
The cadets presented the colors for this ceremony at Mt Zion Cemetery.  This celebration honored those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and recognized the other veterans in attendance.  The ceremony also included: prayers, patriotic songs, remarks, and the playing of Taps.  A "well done" to the cadets who supported the event. 

- Eagle View Field Day, May 23rd.  
For the third consecutive year, the cadets assisted the event organizers by running new stations that the cadets had developed.  These included an obstacle course, various races, and the tug-of-war. This day-long effort was well-received by the middle school teachers and students.

- CV High School Blood Drive, May 4th.  
The JROTC cadet battalion hosted the spring blood drive for the Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank (CPBB) in the Auxiliary Gym during 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM.  This was the fourteenth semi-annual blood drive supported by the cadet battalion.  During those events, the CPBB has now collected over 900 units (pints) of blood, including 69 pints from 100 registered donors during this blood drive.  Thanks to everyone who worked on the blood drive and especially those who donated blood to help other members of our community.

- Battalion Awards Ceremony, April 24th.  The JROTC battalion conducted a formation and awards ceremony in the Spectator Gym on to recognize cadets who have excelled in academics, leadership, athletics, JROTC duties and activities, and community service during 2nd semester.  Cadets were presented awards from both the JROTC program and several community organizations, including: AUSA, MOAA, VFW, Sons of the American Revolution, National Sojourners, Daughters of the American Revolution, U.S. Army Recruiting Command, and the Military Order of the World Wars.  It was great to see a large number of family members, administrators, and other members of the community in the audience.

- JROTC Military Ball, April 13th.  The 7th Annual CV JROTC Military Ball was a lot of fun for the 112 people who attended.  This dinner and dance was held at the Letort View Community Center on Carlisle Barracks.  Following a social hour, the formal part of the program started with the entry under the saber arch, the presentation of the colors, and a round of toasts.  Attendees settled in to enjoy a delicious dinner which was topped off with a beautiful cake.  The crowd was then treated to the inspiring words of our guest speaker.  Colonel Kardos recognized members of the senior class for their contributions to the program by presenting each of them with a JROTC coin.  After the colors were retired, everyone joined the dance instructors on the ballroom floor and had a great time learning a variety of dances.  Classy, elegant, and fun -- the CV JROTC Military Ball.  We can't wait to do it all again next year!

- CV JROTC Raider Team Wins League Championship!  On April 7th, the CV JROTC Raider Team won the League 3 Raider Championship for the seventh consecutive year.  This physically and mentally demanding competition was held at Shippensburg University in a field of seven high schools from across south central Pennsylvania.  The competition is composed of: the Army Physical Fitness Test (push-ups, sit-ups, 2-mile run), Land Navigation Course, the One-Rope Bridge Construction and Traverse, First Aid and Litter Carry, and a 3-kilometer Team Run. After months of intensive training, the CV cadets put on an impressive showing,including winning all five of the events.  Also, Cadet Madison Johnson was presented the Ironwoman award for earning the highest Physical Fitness Test score among all female competitors.  While only our A Team (one team per school) is allowed to compete for the Championship, the B Team competed against the B Teams from two other schools, and won that competition by also taking 1st place in all five events.

B Team:  Rylan Foust (Team Captain), Chris Olenick, Alexis Pottinger, Kacy Rabanal, Sean Mikkelson, Aniika Craddock, Caleb Hudson, Stephen Houck, Caleb Frawley, Andrew Casher.  

- Eagle View Musical production, March 16-18.  During the three showings of this year's musical production, the cadets provided ushers to assist in seating the large crowds that came out to watch this very popular show.  

- Battalion Awards Ceremony, February 14th.  The cadet battalion conducted its winter awards ceremony on Feb 14 in the Spectator Gym to recognize cadets' accomplishments in academics, athletics, leadership, competitive teams, and community service.  Our thanks to family members, staff and faculty, and other members of the community who came out to support the cadets.

- Echoes in the Dome, February 3rd.  Approximately 20 cadets assisted the CV High School Band Boosters with running the band competition known as Echoes in the Dome.  The cadets helped with a variety of duties, including: parking, student guides, PAC guides, and judge runners.

- Course Scheduling Night, January 31st.  
During this event, COL Kardos, SFC Vargas, and several cadets were available in the cafeteria to discuss JROTC with parents and students who were interested in the program.  In addition to answering questions, the JROTC team provided pamphlets and other handouts outlining information about the program.

- League 3 Drill Team Competition Champions!  On January 27th, the CV JROTC Drill Team and Color Guard won the annual JROTC League 3 Drill Team Championship for the second year in a row.  Competing in a 10-school field, CV JROTC brought home ten trophies, including: 1st place in the All-Around Drill Team category, 1st place in Color Guard, 1st place in Platoon Inspection, 2nd place in Armed Drill, and 2nd place in Unarmed Drill. The team captains were C/MAJ Hana Youssef (Inspection), C/2LT Michael Fogarty (Color Guard), C/CSM Lauren Bellis (Armed Drill), and C/SSG Kiersten Melder (Unarmed Drill).  Cadet Bellis won the the Commanders Inspection against the drill capatins of the other nine schools.  Cadets Lauren Bellis, Nicholas Tafel, and Michael Fogarty took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the Knockout competition out of almost 200 cadets.  A "Well Done!" to all team members who worked very hard to achieve these results.

- JROTC Middle School Presentations, January 23, 24, and 25.
  As part of briefings by CVHS Department Leaders, Colonel Kardos presented information about the JROTC program to 8th grade students at Good Hope MS (January 23) and Eagle View MS (January 24).  A team of cadets spoke about JROTC to interested 8th grade students at Good Hope MS on January 24 and at Eagle View MS on January 25.

- Seven-Year Anniversary, January 20th.  The CV JROTC program celebrated its seven-year anniversary.  You can see some of the cadets' accomplishments in the activities listed below.  As always, our focus is on motivating young people to be better citizens, leaders, and students.  We're looking forward to a terrific eighth year!
