Middle School

Cumberland Valley Middle School Cross Country - Fall 2019

When are tryouts?

Cross country team tryouts are August 20, 21, and 22, 2019 at Mountain View.  Students from Eagle View will ride an activity bus to Mountain View each day. All runners need to be picked up at Mountain View at 5PM.

What about physicals?

They are a MUST!  Make sure you have a PIAA physical form and a scheduled physical after June 1st, 2019 and before August 20! In order to try out for the team, athletes must have a physical form completed and handed in to the athletic trainers’ office, or directly to Coach Smith. CV offers athletic physicals for the new school year on June 4th and 5th.  More information can be found on the CV athletic trainer’s site: http://www.cvschools.org/athletics/athletic_training/in-_house_physical_information

How long are races?

Middle school races are 2 miles.  We will prepare for these races by gradually running different distances.  Many runners will run 4 or 5 miles at a time in practice by the end of the season.

When are practices and races?

Practice is each day after school at Mountain View from 3 - 5 PM. All team members will need to be picked up at Mountain View each day at 5 PM.  Races are usually at 4 PM on Wednesdays, held at Mountain View or at competitors’ schools. Families are encouraged to come and support runners. There will be two or three Saturday meets.

What kind of commitment am I making to cross country?

Joining an interscholastic sport takes time and commitment. For the duration of the season, (through mid-October), cross country practices and meets should take precedence over any other sports. All team members are expected to be available for all practices and meets, including Saturday invitationals. If athletes have three unexcused absences, they will need to conference with parents and Coach Smith about whether they should remain on the team.

How far should I be able to run?

Focus on time rather than distance as you begin your training.  20 minutes is a good start, with frequent running throughout the week.  The best way to avoid injury is to gradually increase your distance. As part of tryouts, athletes will need to be able to run the length of a cross country course, which is two miles.

When do I go to summer running with my teammates?

Check here for summer running dates and information. Summer conditioning sessions will start on Tuesday, July 10.  Check the back frequently for updates on times and meeting locations!
