Impact Testing

The Athletic Department at Cumberland Valley High School has been working with WellSpan Health to increase awareness of sports related head injury in athletes playing contact sports. As part of this initiative, each athlete in grades 7-12 will undergo a neuropsychologial assessment through the use of the computer based ImPACT test. The test provides an objective measurement of attention span, working memory, sustained attention, reaction time, response variability, visual and verbal memory, selective and non-verbal program solving. The test results for each baseline test is password protected and will be retained on a secure ImPACT server. After the inauguaral year, baseline tests will be given every other year.

If a sports related concussion should occur during the season, the athlete will be retested with ImPACT. The retest results will be compared to the baseline and can assist the medical staff in making return to play decisions. If necessary, recommendations may be made for a pediatric neurological consulation by Todd Barron, MD and Sarah Hunt, CRNP. Both have training in the interpretation of the ImPACT test. WellSpan Pediatric Neurology is registered with ImPACT as a certified consultant. We also refer to Hershey Medical Center at their Concussion Clinic.

Your student athlete will be scheduled to complete the baseline ImPACT testing either during the summer or after the individual team rosters have been finalized.
