Head Coach:  Jeff Thompson

Coach Thompson

Jeff is in his first year as 9th Grade Boys Basketball Coach here at Cumberland Valley, bringing thirty-seven years of basketball coaching experience to the program. His first four years as an assistant coach were split evenly between the Dickinson College and Shippensburg University men. After four more years at the assistant level in high school boys’ basketball at Trinity and Cedar Cliff, Jeff was head coach of the Trinity girls. Trinity won their first District III championship (class A) his second year and were the champs of Eastern Pennsylvania that year. The following year, and his last coaching the distaff side (1984), the Trinity girls were District III AA champions and the Eastern AA runners-up. Coach Thompson then led the Mechanicsburg boys from 1984-1991, winning two Mid-Penn conference crowns and 100 games. Jeff spent sixteen seasons with the Susquenita boys; they were Mid-Penn conference champs in 1996-1997 and co-champs in 2003-2004. With the Upper Dauphin boys, from 2008-2010, his teams were 25-22. Overall Coach Thompson amassed a 412-298 record at the high school varsity level as head coach. Coach Thompson has the unique distinction of leading his team to a District III playoff win in all four classifications (A-Trinity girls, AA-Upper Dauphin boys, AAA-Susquenita boys and AAAA-Mechanicsburg boys).

Coach Thompson was captain of his league champion HS basketball team at Chagrin Falls High School in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, his senior year and was named to the “Cleveland Plain Dealer” Dream Team that season. Coach Thompson was also a two sport athlete, baseball and basketball, at Dickinson College. He earned all-MAC mention in both sports, and was the recipient of the MacAndrew’s trophy, as the outstanding Dickinson athlete in 1972. In basketball at Dickinson, Coach Thompson was the MVP of the SunCoast Classic in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1972, scoring 28 points and gathering 22 rebounds in the championship game versus BrandeisUniversity. Coach Thompson remains the only Dickinson basketball player to amass 300 points and 300 rebounds in two different seasons (both MAC playoff years for Dickinson) and is one of two players, and the most recent, to average a double-double for their career. Jeff still holds the single season rebounding record at the college.

Jeff has a supervision certificate in School Counseling Services and is currently a Middle School Guidance Counselor at Eagle View. Coach Thompson and his wife, Cindy, have five offspring: Christy, a graduate of Connecticut College; Whitney, a Vassar College graduate; Stephen, a graduate of Carleton College; Karen, a graduate of Kenyon College; and Julianne, a Freshman at Grinnell College.
